Browns Roster Cuts: Marcus Benard, Auston English Waived/Injured, and More

Will DE Marcus Benard remain with the team in some capacity after being waived/injured?
Will DE Marcus Benard remain with the team in some capacity after being waived/injured?

The Cleveland Browns did not outright waive anybody on Monday to get their roster down to 75 players, but they made several injury-related moved and also claimed a player off waivers. Here is a quick summary of all of the moves, followed by some notes on each of the transactions:

  • Waived/Injured: DE Marcus Benard, DE Auston English, CB Antwuan Reed
  • Placed on IR: LB Chris Gocong, LB Emmanuel Acho
  • Reserve/PUP: DT Phil Taylor
  • Claimed Off Waivers: DE Ernest Owusu (Minnesota Vikings)

The waived/injured list usually means you have the intention of releasing the player, but they are currently injured. By placing him on the waived/injured list, one of three things can happen. The first possibility is that a team can claim the player off waivers and wait for them to heal. The second option is that the Browns can negotiate a financial settlement with the player and then outright release the player. The third option is that the Browns retain control of the player, and they revert to the injured reserve list.

Benard suffered a dislocated elbow against the Eagles. Even though he was having a pretty good camp, he was not guaranteed a roster spot since there were arguably four defensive ends already ahead of him on the depth chart. English did not appear to have any form of an injury, and it is surprising that there was not a desire to have him on the practice squad. Reed had a good showing at the Family Fun Night practice, but was otherwise having a quiet camp.

Gocong going on injured reserve was expected given his Achilles' injury a few weeks back. I'm not surprised to see Acho on injured reserve either. He has really had zero impact this camp, with guys like Craig Robertson and L.J. Fort outshining him. This is an excuse to stash him away for a year to see if he develops into anything more in next year's camp, rather than just outright cutting him.

Lastly, by placing Taylor on the PUP, it confirms that the earliest he could play in a game this year would be in Week 7. He would likely need some time to practice, though, so we might not see him until closer to the mid-way point of the season.

With two defensive ends going on injury-related lists, the Browns added defensive end Ernest Owusu to the roster. He probably won't be on the team very long with final cuts due shortly after the final preseason game. Owusu was an undrafted free agent from the University of California and is 6-foot-4, 275-pounds. He had one tackle this preseason in three games.

Final roster cuts are due this Friday by 9:00 PM EST.
