Browns Sign WR Josh Cooper to Practice Squad

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns re-signed wide receiver Josh Cooper on Monday to their practice squad on Monday. The Browns had waived Cooper from the 53-man roster one week earlier, replacing him with running back Fozzy Whittaker. It's hard to tell what the plans are for Whittaker; it was thought that he would be the team's new kickoff returner, but he was inactive Thursday night against the Bills. When asked about the kickoff return position today, Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said that Greg Little would continue returning kicks for now.

Even though Cooper isn't on the 53-man roster, perhaps he'll find his way back on there if the Browns don't like what they see in Whittaker. The signing of Cooper also coincides with the fact that Brandon Weeden has taken over the starting quarterback role again; perhaps Cooper will be the type of guy who keeps the spirits of his college teammate high.

In the process of adding Cooper, the Browns released linebacker Justin Staples from the practice squad.

Cleveland should have another roster decision coming soon, as Brian Hoyer has yet to be placed on injured reserve. It is unclear whether the Browns will bring in a new quarterback, or add a position player until Jason Pinkston can come off the short-term injured reserve list. At the moment, tight end (and former college quarterback) MarQueis Gray will serve as the emergency quarterback.
