Browns vs. Jets: Analyzing the Snap Counts (Defense)

Looking at the defensive snap counts in the Browns' 24-13 loss to the Jets.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The Browns' defense sucked, plain and simple. The Jets were the most intercepted and most sacked team in the league, and yet our defense didn't even get a single hit on the quarterback! The Jets also converted 12-of-18 (66%) of their third downs. The snap count distributions for the Browns' defenders against the Jets are listed below. [Week 16 offensive snap counts for Cleveland can be found here]

Phil Taylor: 1 assist (1 combined).
Ahtyba Rubin: 3 tackles, 3 assists (6 combined).
John Hughes: 1 tackle, 3 assists (4 combined). 1 pass defended.
Armonty Bryant: 1 tackle (1 combined).
Billy Winn: 1 tackle (1 combined).
Ishmaa'ily Kitchen: 1 assist (1 combined).

Thoughts: NT Phil Taylor left the game late with a concussion, which is why NT Ishmaa'ily Kitchen had more reps than usual. Otherwise, the snap count distributions were similar to last week's. I didn't think we'd miss DE Desmond Bryant a bunch, but our run defense has suffered big time since he's been out.

D'Qwell Jackson: 7 tackles, 4 assists (11 combined). 1 pass defended.
Craig Robertson: 5 tackles, 1 assist (6 combined). 1 tackle for loss, 1 pass defended.

Thoughts: We need an impact inside linebacker. Really, I don't know what else to say here at this point.

Paul Kruger: 4 tackles (4 combined).
Barkevious Mingo: 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 tackle for loss, 1 pass defended.
Jabaal Sheard: 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined). 1 pass defended.
Eric Martin: No stats registered.

Thoughts: For shame. The only memorable play came when OLB Barkevious Mingo used his speed to stop a trick play by the Jets for a loss of 11 yards. These are supposed to be our top three pass rushers, and all of them should be perfectly healthy. For them to not even get a single hit on QB Geno Smith is inexcusable.

Joe Haden: 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 2 passes defended.
Buster Skrine: 4 tackles (4 combined).
Leon McFadden: 3 tackles (3 combined).
Julian Posey: No stats registered.

Thoughts: CB Joe Haden reportedly left late in the game due to his hip injury, but the snap count report shows that he didn't miss many plays. The defense could not stop WR David Nelson, giving up two touchdown receptions to the guy who was playing against them in training camp.

T.J. Ward: 3 tackles (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
Tashaun Gipson: 6 tackles, 1 assist (7 combined).
Jordan Poyer: 3 tackles (3 combined).

Thoughts: I know CB Joe Haden wants SS T.J. Ward to stay, but if another team even matches what the Browns might offer him, don't you think he'll want to get the hell out of here immediately? Hopefully Ray Horton can have some influence on him staying.
