2013 DBN Mock Draft: Kansas City Chiefs Select CB Dee Milliner at No. 1

Joe Robbins

It's time to begin our third annual Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft! With the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...

Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama

This selection and write-up was made by BuenosAiresDawg:

I was completely unprepared for this draft. I have watched no tape and haven't scouted any players. My relationship with football for the past five years has been watching it on HD and talking about it. I am Michael Lombardi.

But, guess what? Andy Reid saved me and made this decision easy. He picked this player for me. The Chiefs have [reportedly] traded for Alex Smith, and I assume that they will franchise tag or extend left tackle Branden Albert. He is a known quantity. They might overpay him a bit, but he is a top-10 left tackle right now. The risk/reward on picking Luke Joeckel, who right now might be the best player available, is just not that good.

The combination of Milliner, safety Eric Berry, cornerback Brandon Flowers and whatever other spare part they use for a strong safety might become a top-5 defensive back unit. Combine that with above-average linebackers and a developing defensive line, and the future of the Kansas City defense looks bright. About that gaping hole at WR? Hopefully Reid can fix that for me too.

In his personal email to me, BuenosAiresDawg told me, "I hope I don't screw this up completely." Well, he might have done just that. Only kidding. It was a surprising selection in the sense that it goes against what pretty much every single mock draft has done so far. Overall, I like the reasoning, though. With the Chiefs having their quarterback situation settled, they can move on to other areas of need.

Luke Joeckel seems like the more likely pick at No. 1 still, but I definitely think Kansas City should entertain the thought of having a shut-down secondary (even if that concept didn't work out too well for Andy Reid in Philadelphia over the past couple of years). ESPN's Bill Williamson actually posed a hypothetical Milliner-to-KC question earlier today as well, so maybe that type of discussion will heat up after free agency is over with. I like that the DBN Mock Draft has started off "against the grain."

The Jacksonville Jaguars are up next, led by Adrock2099.
