2013 DBN Mock Draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Select Sherrif Floyd at No. 13

USA TODAY Sports

With the 13th pick in the 2013 Dawgs By Nature NFL Community Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select...

Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida

This selection and write-up was made by LessThanJake:

For the last two years, figuring out who to pick in these mock drafts has been a pretty easy choice for me. This year is a little harder. After doing my research, I fully expect this pick to be in the Jets' hands in a trade for cornerback Darrelle Revis. However, I had to rack my brain and still think of a good selection for the Bucs, just in case.

This year there will be a "new Sherrif in Tampa" with the selection of DT Sharrif Floyd out of Florida. I am a fan of taking the best player available, and that's what this pick is. The Buccaneers were ranked No. 1 against the run in 2012, but last against the pass. Right now, their top option at cornerback is our old friend Eric Wright, but I doubt he will be there opening day because of a roster bonus. With the top two corners off the board, it would be a reach for Xavier Rhodes. Many people see Floyd as a top-5 pick, so I had to snatch him up.

Former first-round pick Gerald McCoy took on too many blockers in Tampa's 4-3 under scheme. Floyd excels in rushing the passer and will help McCoy with the blockers at point of attack. With Tampa picking Mark Barron in the first round last year and signing Dashon Goldson this year, their safety position is locked down. Pass rush will be the cornerbacks' best friend, and that is what they will get out of the trio of Floyd, McCoy, and Bowers.

This coming season, I would anticipate the whole defensive line getting more pressure on opposing quarterbacks with this addition. Floyd is someone you have to scheme against and who can free up some others to get to the quarterback. Floyd won't have a "Suh-impact," but I think he will get 5-6 sacks and allow the others around him to get free as well.

As a side note, this is a compelling point in the draft, having three teams from the NFC South -- the Buccaneers, Panthers, and Saints -- picking back-to-back-to-back. I can't fault the Buccaneers taking Floyd here, a guy who seems like a great value pick given where some projections have him going. With that said, I would ask at this point, if there is a reason why Greg Schiano would prefer Floyd over Star Lotulelei, who is still on the board?

The Carolina Panthers are up next, led by rossn2007.
