2013 DBN Mock Draft: New Orleans Saints Select Damontre Moore at No. 15

USA TODAY Sports

With the 15th pick in the 2013 Dawgs By Nature NFL Community Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints select...

Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M

This selection and write-up was made by Ted Washington's Belly:

The New Orleans Saints had a historically bad defense last year. They gave up the most yards in NFL history, a staggering 440.1 per game, and allowed 28.4 points per game. With Drew Brees on offense, they’ll be able to put points on the board, but they aren’t going to win anything unless they shore up this abysmal defense.

The first big change of the off-season for the Saints' defense came with the addition of Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator, a familiar face to us here in Cleveland. Ryan brings with him his 3-4 defense that has proven effective in the Superdome in the past. The Saints also added free agent cornerback Keenan Lewis to help their secondary and are reportedly looking into Nnamdi Asomugha as well. As their team currently sits, the Saints' biggest need is a consistent pass-rushing threat at outside linebacker. They finished the season with only 30 sacks last year, tied for 25th in the league. Still on the board are pass rushers Damontre Moore, Barkevious Mingo, and Bjoern Werner. The pick came down to who I personally like best, and that is Moore.

Moore has big-time potential as a pass-rushing 3-4 outside linebacker. He’s got great size and athleticism. He produced in college with 26.5 sacks and 45 tackles for a loss in three seasons. He has experience playing outside linebacker in a 3-4. He is also only 20 years old. I’d slot Moore to be starting at the ROLB position for the Saints day one and expect him to be one of their leading pass rushers alongside defensive end Cameron Jordan. Overall, I think the Saints could have a quick turnaround from being a terrible defense to having at least an average unit.

With Drew Brees commanding the offense (although he also struggled at times in 2012), the Saints should definitely look to do whatever they can to improve the defense. Going with a pass rusher to improve their level of talent at linebacker is a good start. It does feel weird that a few months ago, Moore, Werner, and Mingo were all mocked to go to the Browns at No. 6 overall, but at this point, they're all available for the Saints to choose from at No. 15 overall.

The St. Louis Rams are up next, led by nickjs21.
