Analyzing the Snap Counts in Lions vs. Browns (Offense)

Looking at the offensive snap counts in the Browns' 24-6 win over the Lions.

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns' starters played about a quarter and a half this week against the Detroit Lions, so the playing time percentages are certainly going to be different from the first preseason game. However, we'll still look to see if there are any subtle differences among the backups in terms of snap counts. First, we'll start with the offense.

Quarterback

Pos Player Plays % Stats
QB Brandon Weeden 26 43% 8-of-12 for 117 yards, 2 TD.
QB Jason Campbell 25 41% 12-of-14 for 106 yards, 1 TD. 1 carry, 9 yards.
QB Brian Hoyer 10 16% 1-of-3 for 19 yards. 2 carries, -4 yards.

Obviously, it was a big day for Weeden, who left with another 17-0 lead. Campbell barely played last week as the No. 2 quarterback, but he saw extended work into the fourth quarter this time around, while Hoyer was the guy who only got a couple of series. Campbell helped his stats by moving the chains on third down, while the offense stalled under Hoyer. All three quarterbacks seem like safe bets to make the roster still.

Running Back

Pos Player Plays % Stats
RB Dion Lewis 20 33% 5 carries, 33 yards, 6.6 avg. 4 catches, 15 yards (5 targets).
RB Brandon Jackson 16 26% 7 carries, -2 yards, -0.3 avg. 3 catches, 39 yards, 1 TD (3 targets).
FB Chris Ogbonnaya 11 18% 2 carries, 7 yards, 3.5 avg. 1 catch, -1 yard (1 target).
RB Miguel Maysonet 11 18% 4 carries, 5 yards, 1.3 avg.
RB Trent Richardson 10 16% 6 carries, 33 yards, 5.5 avg. 0 catches (1 target).
FB Owen Marecic 5 8% No stats registered.

It's painful to see Lewis at the top of the chart -- he had the potential to be a great niche player, but we'll have to find an alternative now. Richardson either carried the ball or had a pass thrown his way on 70% of the snaps he was in the game for. I think it's safe to say he'll be heavily utilized this year. Jackson was good as a receiver, making a few open field moves. Ogbonnaya strengthened his case as a blocking fullback.

Wide Receiver

Pos Player Plays % Stats
WR Greg Little 30 49% 1 catch, 11 yards (2 targets).
WR Josh Gordon 23 38% 3 catches, 72 yards (4 targets).
WR Josh Cooper 17 28% 2 catches, 16 yards (3 targets).
WR Davone Bess 15 25% No stats registered.
WR Travis Benjamin 14 23% 1 catch, 9 yards (2 targets).
WR Dominique Croom 10 16% 1 catch, 7 yards (1 target).
WR Naaman Roosevelt 9 15% No stats registered.
WR Cordell Roberson 9 15% 1 catch, 19 yards (1 target).
WR Tori Gurley 8 13% 0 catches (1 target).
WR Mike Edwards 4 7% 0 catches (1 target).

So much for the Roosevelt hype I was hoping to see; he wasn't even targeted on his 9 snaps. Among the backups, Croom and Robertson jumped ahead of Gurley in terms of reps. Edwards has been buried at the bottom for two straight weeks. Little saw significant action, including 4 reps with Campbell and the second-team offense. Bess didn't get targeted among the first-teamers, but Cooper took advantage of Norwood's absence with a couple of catches.

Tight End

Pos Player Plays % Stats
TE Kellen Davis 28 46% 1 catch, 13 yards (1 target).
TE Jordan Cameron 28 46% 3 catches, 42 yards, 2 TD (3 targets).
TE Brad Smelley 18 30% No stats registered.
TE Dan Gronkowski 11 18% No stats registered.
TE Gary Barnidge 8 13% No stats registered.
TE Travis Tannahill 1 2% No stats registered.

Cameron obviously stole the show with two touchdown receptions and a nice athletic catch. Davis also had a pretty nice catch for a guy who is supposed to be terrible at that. None of the other tight ends were targeted by the backups; they were probably needed to help contain the Lions' defensive front.

Offensive Line

Pos Player Plays %
OG Garrett Gilkey 41 67%
OT Mitchell Schwartz 32 52%
OG John Greco 32 52%
OG Caylin Hauptmann 29 48%
OT Martin Wallace 28 46%
OT Joe Thomas 26 43%
C Alex Mack 26 43%
C Jarrod Shaw 25 41%
OT Rashad Butler 25 41%
OT Aaron Adams 10 16%
C Braxston Cave 10 16%
OT Dominic Alford 10 16%
OG Jason Pinkston 10 16%

Last week, Pinkston saw extended work to get him prepared for a starting role. Since he went down just 10 snaps into this game, Gilkey shouldered that some role this week, playing with the first- and second-team offense. Schwartz and Greco played 6 snaps with Campbell, while Thomas and Mack were only with Weeden. Butler's playing time corresponded precisely with when Campbell entered the game, replacing Thomas. That might indicate he's a safe bet to make the roster.
