Analyzing the Snap Counts in Lions vs. Browns (Offense)

The Cleveland Browns' starters played about a quarter and a half this week against the Detroit Lions, so the playing time percentages are certainly going to be different from the first preseason game. However, we'll still look to see if there are any subtle differences among the backups in terms of snap counts. First, we'll start with the offense.

Quarterback

Obviously, it was a big day for Weeden, who left with another 17-0 lead. Campbell barely played last week as the No. 2 quarterback, but he saw extended work into the fourth quarter this time around, while Hoyer was the guy who only got a couple of series. Campbell helped his stats by moving the chains on third down, while the offense stalled under Hoyer. All three quarterbacks seem like safe bets to make the roster still.

Running Back

It's painful to see Lewis at the top of the chart -- he had the potential to be a great niche player, but we'll have to find an alternative now. Richardson either carried the ball or had a pass thrown his way on 70% of the snaps he was in the game for. I think it's safe to say he'll be heavily utilized this year. Jackson was good as a receiver, making a few open field moves. Ogbonnaya strengthened his case as a blocking fullback.

Wide Receiver

So much for the Roosevelt hype I was hoping to see; he wasn't even targeted on his 9 snaps. Among the backups, Croom and Robertson jumped ahead of Gurley in terms of reps. Edwards has been buried at the bottom for two straight weeks. Little saw significant action, including 4 reps with Campbell and the second-team offense. Bess didn't get targeted among the first-teamers, but Cooper took advantage of Norwood's absence with a couple of catches.

Tight End

Cameron obviously stole the show with two touchdown receptions and a nice athletic catch. Davis also had a pretty nice catch for a guy who is supposed to be terrible at that. None of the other tight ends were targeted by the backups; they were probably needed to help contain the Lions' defensive front.

Offensive Line

Last week, Pinkston saw extended work to get him prepared for a starting role. Since he went down just 10 snaps into this game, Gilkey shouldered that some role this week, playing with the first- and second-team offense. Schwartz and Greco played 6 snaps with Campbell, while Thomas and Mack were only with Weeden. Butler's playing time corresponded precisely with when Campbell entered the game, replacing Thomas. That might indicate he's a safe bet to make the roster.
