It's not often that a team hires an offensive assistant before they hire an offensive coordinator, but that is what the Cleveland Browns did when they announced the hiring of Brian Angelichio as their new tight ends coach. Angelichio was a candidate for Rutgers' offensive coordinator position.
In a unique kind of twist, the Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers actually swapped tight ends coaches -- Jon Embree (who was with Cleveland in 2013) joined Tampa Bay's staff a few days ago, where Angelichio spent the past two seasons as tight ends coach.
In 2012, Angelichio didn't have much of a threat at tight end to work with in Dallas Clark, who finished the season with 47 catches for 435 yards and 4 touchdowns. This past season, Angelichio had even less to work with. We're talking about no-namers like Kyle Adams, Nate Byham, Tom Crabtree, Patrick Scales, Luke Stocker, and Tim Wright. Angelichio managed to develop and get production out of Wright, an undrafted free agent who was second on the Buccaneers with 54 catches for 571 yards and 5 touchdowns.
