The Cleveland Browns received the ball first for a change, and after picking up one first down, Cleveland had to punt. The Bills did the same -- they picked up one first down before punting back to the Browns, but the punt was a good one, pinning Cleveland back at the five yard line.

Cleveland then put together a very impressive drive that combined quick hitting passes with effective rushes by the running backs. When the Browns got inside the ten yard line, they ran the ball twice and had center Nick McDonald go down with an injury. On third down, QB Brian Hoyer tried to fit the ball to WR Miles Austin in the back of the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete. The Browns kicked a 22-yard field goal by K Billy Cundiff to take a 3-0 lead.

The Browns' defense forced another punt, and the offense responded with a three-and-out and a punt of their own. Before the end of the first quarter, former Browns TE MarQueis Gray had a big catch-and-run into Cleveland territory.
