The Bengals received the ball first and got into field goal range after a roughing the passer penalty on third down. The Bengals could have tried a 49-yard field goal, but opted to go for it on fourth down, which QB Andy Dalton converted to WR A.J. Green on a slant for a first down. Cincinnati used that momentum to finish off a long drive that lasted over seven minutes with a 2-yard touchdown run by RB Jeremy Hill, giving the Bengals a 7-0 lead.
Then, it was time for QB Johnny Manziel to take the field. After two straight handoffs, on 3rd-and-2, Manziel tried a quick pump fake to WR Josh Gordon on a slant. With a linebacker shifting over, Manziel kept it and tried running up the middle, but only got a yard, forcing Cleveland to punt. Cincinnati proceeded to drive down the field again, but DE Desmond Bryant got a third-down sack to force the Bengals to try a 44-yard field goal, which K Mike Nugent hit to give the Bengals a 10-0 lead.
Manziel got sacked on the second play of his next series trying to run the read-option, and then WR Andrew Hawkins dropped a pass on 3rd-and-13 that would've been a first down (but he did take a big hit to the back). After a good punt return by Cincinnati, they have the ball in Cleveland territory.
The Bengals dominated the first quarter of play -- can Cleveland re-group in the second quarter?
