The Cleveland Browns picked up several first downs, but the officials over-turned a third-down catch by WR Josh Gordon. The Browns attempted a 45-yard field goal by K Garrett Hartley, which he drilled right down the middle to tie the game at 3-3.
The Panthers' next drive didn't go long before they had to punt for the first time. Cleveland then went three-and-out on their next drive despite a good third-down throw by QB Johnny Manziel, and Cleveland punted right back. Carolina started with decent field position after WR Marlon Moore made contact with the Panthers' punt returner before he could field the ball.
The Panthers converted several third downs to move down the field and get into the red zone again. Facing a 3rd-and-goal from the 2 yard line and under two minutes to go in the half, QB Cam Newton bootlegged out to his right and took it himself for the touchdown to give the Panthers a 10-3 lead.
On the first play of Cleveland's next drive, the Browns ran a designed quarterback rollout with Manziel, and he was injured on the play and taken to the locker room. QB Brian Hoyer came in but could not muster a first down and the Browns punted.
