Browns Reportedly Hiring Tony Tuioti as Assistant Defensive Quality Control Coach

What was the connection between a guy in the college ranks and Mike Pettine?

This is not Tony Tuioti, but it's a player from the University he coached at.

According to a report by Dave Reardon of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the Cleveland Browns have hired Tony Tuioti as their assistant defensive line coach:

UPDATE: Tuioti was actually hired as "Defensive Quality Control Coach."

If the report holds true, Reardon would likely serve as an assistant under former Bills defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, who was rumored to have been hired last week by the Browns. Cleveland has not officially confirmed the Weaver hiring, though.

Tuioti was affiliated with the University of Hawaii from 2008-2013 and was most recently their linebackers coach, but was dismissed of that role after this past season. How did he end up in Cleveland? According to Reardon, there was a slight connection to head coach Mike Pettine:

I'm told the connection that helped Tuioti get his foot in the door is Mike Smith, the co-defensive coordinator at Texas Tech who spent a season coaching with Tuioti at UH. Smith played for the Browns' new head coach, Mike Pettine, when Pettine was outside linebackers coach of the Baltimore Ravens in 2005.
