Well that didn't take long. Today Adam Schefter reported that the Cleveland Browns have indeed match the Jacksonville Jaguars' 5 year offer sheet to C Alex Mack:
Well that didn't take long: Browns are matching Jacksonville's offer sheet for C Alex Mack. Cleveland keeps Mack, per source.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 11, 2014
The Browns had five days to choose whether or not to keep Mack, but chose to take swift action by matching the deal in a matter of hours. Mack's deal is reportedly for five years and $42 million, with $26 million "guaranteed" over the first three years.
Mack will get paid $10 million in 2014 and $8 million in 2015, all fully guaranteed. Before the 2016 season, Mack can choose to void his contract and hit the free agent market. If he chooses not to void this deal, he will make $8 million guaranteed in 2016.
Other interesting facts about Mack's contract:
- Schefter also reported today that Mack's deal carries a no-trade clause.
- Mack's $26 million "guarantee" is the highest guarantee that any free agent was able to acquire this offseason.
- Mack's reported $10 million cap hit in 2014 will make him the most expensive center in the league, but in 2015 Ryan Kalil will earn that title with $11.795 against the cap, while Mack's cap number drops to $8 million.
- Nick Mangold of the New York Jets will also count for more against the cap than Mack in 2015, with $10.4 against the cap.
