With the tenth pick in the 2014 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select...
Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
This selection and write-up was made by tmptplayer:
After losing Nate Burleson to the Browns in Free Agency, the Lions need a WR to star opposite Calvin Johnson. They picked up Golden Tate in the offseason, but were really thin otherwise. While WR might not be their greatest need, it’s still a need, and Sammy Watkins would be too much for them to pass at #10. There are even rumors that they may even be willing to trade up for him (link). Watkins makes a lot of sense at this pick as he is the best player available and fits a team need.
Watkins will have an immediate impact as he will have the advantage of studying under two solid and seasoned receivers, and won’t be the primary concern of an opposing secondary. It is unclear if he could immediately beat out Tate for the WR2 or if he’ll be in the slot, but he will definitely be given the opportunity to make plays. While WRs typically take a few years to fully blossom, Watkins won’t have the pressure of being the number one guy while Megatron is there.
This would give the Lions the best one-two punch at receiver in the NFC, and probably the NFL, beating out the Falcons' combination of Roddy White and Julio Jones. It might seem like a little bit of overkill for the Lions to have three good receivers in Calvin Johnson, Watkins, and Golden Tate, but it'd be interesting to watch if this scenario played out. The Lions in general will be interesting to watch this year -- they constantly underachieved under Jim Schwartz, but Jim Caldwell could steer them in a different direction.
The Tennessee Titans are up next, led by Brownie's Year.
