2014 DBN Mock Draft: Oakland Raiders Select OT Greg Robinson at No. 5

Kevin C. Cox

With the fifth pick in the 2014 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select...

Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn

This selection and write-up was made by TuckJob:

6'5" Height35" Arm Length | 332 LBS. Weight | 10" Hands

In last year's draft, I also drafted a tackle for Oakland, feeling that Veldheer was injury-prone and thus not a good tackle (he's never on the field). Now a year later, he is gone, and if Oakland had listened to me, they wouldn't be using yet another high pick on an offensive lineman.

I feel like I am hijacking Pokorny's pick a little here but my hand was forced when all four of the prospects I felt were rated equally, but at a greater position of need for them, were already taken. As for the quarterbacks left on the board, I don't feel any are worth the long-term investment of a 5th-overall pick. Also, with the signing of Matt Schaub, who I don't think is nearly as bad as the dumpster fire he was last year, I believe Oakland gave themselves at least 'average' quarterback play over what they had last year. In my opinion, all of these things combined to 'force' me to make this pick, which was probably last on my list.

Let's get to Robinson: as you can tell from the stats above, he has long arms and is tall and massive. The guy can move as well, he is only a third-year sophomore, and he is a two-year starter and already looks this good. On film he looks absolutely dominant, regularly overpowering opponents in the running game, moving them to the second level and then releasing and picking up another block. At the combine he ran a 4.92... A 4 freakin' 92 for a 6'5" 330+ pound guy, that is a ton of weight moving very fast and not only is he straight line fast hes agile, quick and has fluid hips and solid footwork.

I'm no scout, but Robinson seems to have solid, if not close-to-perfect balance, and uses this and his seemingly endless strength to mask subtle technique mishaps that I assume come from only having started two full years. All this strength, speed and skill sometimes gets him into trouble. From the games I've watched he's been prone (not much, but it's college) to overextend on blocks, destroying his usually-great balance. He also can seem to quit on plays if its going away from him, but mostly he seems to play through the whistle more often then not. The Raiders need a long-term solution at left tackle, and Robinson is not only arguably the best prospect left on the board, he's also playing a position of great need. Also, for a team that has switched schemes so many times in the last couple years, Robinson can do it all -- he's the perfect left tackle for them.

Lastly, the signing of Penn shouldn't change anything about this pick. The Raiders need a long term solution at left tackle, and Robinson IS that guy. Penn is, according to reports, on a deal for two years that is worth $9.6 million, with $4.2 million guaranteed. This is a perfect timetable to acclimate Robinson to the differences in Pro vs. College pass rushers for a couple years, or they can slide Penn over and let Robinson be the dominate force I believe he will be in the NFL.

The Raiders have had a weird offseason, signing a bunch of veteran players who could very well be over-the-hill already. The Raiders need to find their quarterback of the future too, but they have a temporary committment to Matt Schaub. Oakland also showed a clear interest in the offensive tackle position when they tried to sign Roger Saffold, but then failed him on his physical. Seeing Robinson go to the Raiders wouldn't be a surprise...but could Oakland be interested in a receiver like Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans?

The Atlanta Falcons are up next, led by Haden Dawg.
