2014 DBN Mock Draft: Washington Redskins Select CB Bradley Roby at No. 34

For me this pick makes sense where best player available and need meet. Washington has a quarterback I'm not ready to give up on, an offense that has generally seemed to work well over the past few years, and who just acquired DeSean Jackson. Plus, with a coaching change I don't know exactly what they will be looking for on the offensive side of the ball. Plus they picked up Shaun Lauvao to solidify their line so they are good, right? Right?

I would have loved to have added a pass rusher like Dee Ford, an inside linebacker like Ryan Shazier, a mammoth NT like Louis Nix III, or a safety like Calvin Pryor at this spot, but they were all off the board. I considered a better fit on the offensive line (for the likely new power scheme) like Cyrus Kouandjio. But at the end of the day I wasn't sure about the talent dropoff between Kouandjio and guys who might be available later. Gruden did well in Cincinnati without high picks across the line, too. Roby represents the last CB who I really feel comfortable picking this high, and due to the lack of CBs on his tier I went with him.

Roby struggled early last year at Ohio State, but he's got loads of physical talent and is a physical player despite his lack of ideal size. I see him contributing to the Washington secondary next year, if only by replacing the abysmal Tracy Porter as the nickel back.

The Redskins need help in a lot of areas, particularly on defense. Maybe Roby will be able to help stop the Eagles within the division. The success of the Redskins will largely bank on how Robert Griffin III does in his third season, though.
