Fan Perception: What We Learned About the Browns' Defensive Line Heading Into Training Camp

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

In each of our training camp previews, we conduct a poll at the end of the post. The polls are intended to gauge fan perception about certain players or roles on the Cleveland Browns heading into training camp. They help set the initial expectations that fans have on certain players. Here is a summary of each of those polls for the defensive line position:

--------------------------------

Who should start at the defensive end position opposite of Desmond Bryant -- should it be Ahtyba Rubin, or somebody else on the depth chart?

With Ahtyba Rubin heading into the final year of his contract, I was curious if fans would feel that it's time to see what somebody else has to offer at the position, but that wasn't the case. Rubin still had a lot of support to remain a starting defensive end with a convincing 70% of the votes. Besides his solid play, I think it's also a sign of respect for his tenure with the team. With the departures of D'Qwell Jackson and T.J. Ward this offseason, Rubin is the longest-tenured Brown on defense, having been with the team since the 2008 season. [Read Part 1 of the DL Preview]

Hypothetically, if Ahtyba Rubin is not a starting DE this year, who would you like to see start in his place?

This was a follow-up to the previous question: if Rubin does take a seat, who should be considered first in line for a starting role? Billy Winn emerged with 78% of the votes. I think he's viewed as the most complete player, and he's already had a little bit of starting experience. John Hughes was a beast last year, but questions remain as to whether or not he can remain effective in a full-time role. Armonty Bryant is still a bit of a wildcard who seems too undersized to start. [Read Part 2 of the DL Preview]

Which defensive lineman are you most intrigued by?

Among the relatively unknown defensive linemen, Calvin Barnett emerged as the player fans are intrigued by, with 78% of the votes. One of my favorite parts about doing these training camp previews is discovering who those hidden gems might end up being. So far, Barnett is one of those guys fans will be watching closely when camp begins. Even if he has a strong camp, though, the team is so deep on the line that it will be difficult to find a spot for him. [Read Part 3 of the DL Preview]
