Right at the start of the second quarter, QB Josh McCown threw a perfect 34-yard touchdown pass on a go route to RB Duke Johnson in the back left corner of the end zone, giving the Browns a 10-7 lead. The Chargers then spread the offense and went a bit hurry up to alleviate the Browns' pass rush with success, marching right back down the field. The defense buckled down enough to force a 46-yard field goal attempt, which rookie K Josh Lambo drilled to tie the game at 10-10.
The Browns' next drive had some promise, but several penalties forced them into a 1st-and-30 that they were only able to get within a 4th-and-5 at midfield before punting. The Chargers went three-and-out, giving Cleveland an opportunity to drive the ball with under five minutes to go in the half. Cleveland went three-and-out, though, including a third down missed opportunity by WR Dwayne Bowe.
The Chargers were backed up on their next drive, but quickly got the ball to near midfield with a dumpoff to RB Danny Woodhead. With just under two minutes to go, Lambo hit from 45 yards out to give the Chargers a 13-10 lead. The Browns had 1:36 and two timeouts to begin their two-minute drill. McCown got the Browns in range to kick a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 13-13 at the half.
