The Browns got the ball to start the game but went three-and-out after going empty backfield on 3rd-and-short. The Chargers could do nothing when they were pinned back, as QB Philip Rivers began 0-of-3 and San Diego punted. On the next possession, QB Josh McCown fumbled on third down, with the Chargers recovering in Cleveland territory. The defense responded by blowing up the Chargers' offensive line, forcing another three-and-out. San Diego at least managed to change the battle of field position after the punt.
Cleveland moved the ball downfield and passed up on a 50-yard field goal attempt to go for it on 4th-and-2. A pass interference flag on the Chargers gave the Browns a fresh set of downs. It eventually set up a 36-yard field goal by K Travis Coons to give the Browns a 3-0 lead. The Chargers drove into Cleveland territory near the end of the first quarter, but with under a minute to go, Rivers lobbed a perfect pass to WR Keenan Allen for a 28-yard touchdown on a diving grab over CB Pierre Desir. The Chargers lead 7-3 heading to the second quarter of play.
