The Cleveland Browns suffered a heart-wrenching loss to the San Diego Chargers on the road by a final score of 30-27. In a game of back-and-forth lead changes and ties, Chargers rookie kicker Josh Lambo connected on a 34-yard field goal with no time left on the clock. This game after he had missed a 39-yard attempt two seconds earlier, but Browns CB Tramon Williams had jumped offsides, giving San Diego a second crack at it.
It was a game filled with "who has more injuries?" The Chargers were without three of their starting offensive linemen to begin the game, and then lost two wide receivers and two cornerbacks during the game. By the end of the game, the Browns' secondary featured Williams, Pierre Desir, Johnson Bademosi, Jordan Poyer, and Donte Whitner.
Cleveland struck first with a 34-yard field goal by K Travis Coons mid-way through the first quarter. On the Chargers' next drive, QB Philip Rivers hit WR Keenan Allen on a perfect 28-yard touchdown pass over Desir in the front right corner of the end zone, putting San Diego on top 7-3. QB Josh McCown responded with a perfect 34-yard touchdown pass to RB Duke Johnson in a spread formation in the back left corner of the end zone.
The Browns' 10-7 lead didn't last long. Lambo hit a 46-yard field goal on the Chargers' next drive to tie the game at 10-10. Within the final two minutes of the first half, the teams traded field goals to be knotted up at 13-13 at halftime.
The Browns tacked on a 33-yard field goal mid-way through the third quarter to take a 16-13 lead. The Chargers answered with a touchdown as Rivers hit TE Ladarius Green over SS Donte Whitner for a 19-yard score to go up 20-16. Part-way through the fourth quarter, Coons' 40-yard field goal cut the Chargers' lead to 20-19. San Diego drove right back down the field, capping the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Rivers to TE John Phillips. The Chargers had an 8-point lead at 27-19.
McCown put together another solid drive, hitting TE Gary Barnidge on a 19-yard pass to set the team up at the 1 yard line. With 2:09 to play, McCown hit Barnidge for a touchdown, and then hit WR Taylor Gabriel on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 27-27.
Rivers had too much time to operate with in the two-minute drill, with the dagger being a 19-yard run by RB Danny Woodhead. Fans thought the Browns were headed to overtime after Lambo's miss, but as mentioned earlier, the offsides penalty cost Cleveland that opportunity. The Browns are now 1-3 with a trip to Baltimore next Sunday.
