The Steelers got the ball to begin the game and after picking up a first down, Cleveland stuffed a couple of runs, stopped Pittsburgh on third down, and forced a punt. Without being touched, QB Johnny Manziel fumbled with an empty hand on the first play, and Pittsburgh recovered in the red zone. Cleveland's defense held the Steelers to a 24-yard field goal, making it a 3-0 game. The bigger story was QB Landry Jones going down with a foot injury.
On third down of the next series, Manziel rolled out and found WR Travis Benjamin for the team's biggest pass play of the season. In the red zone, Cleveland could only get to the 5 yard line, allowing K Travis Coons to hit a 23-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3.
QB Ben Roethlisberger led a couple of big pass plays on Pittsburgh's next drive, but OLB Nate Orchard batted down a 3rd-and-2 pass in the red zone and Pittsburgh had to settle for a 33-yard field goal to take a 6-3 lead.
