The Browns got the ball to begin the third quarter. After a couple of nice pass plays by QB Johnny Manziel, the first run play was stuffed for no gain, and then on second down, Manziel was sacked when a free rusher came up the middle. That led to a punt. The Steelers quickly got to the red zone with back-to-back pass interference penalties. Pittsburgh settled for a field goal to make it a 24-3 game mid-way through the third quarter.
Cleveland then put together their best drive of the game, completely through the air down to the 12 yard line. Manziel then made a crazy run play, evading pressure, that looked to have him in for the touchdown, but he was marked down at the half yard line. Head coach Mike Pettine challenged the ruling on the field, but it was upheld. On 1st-and-goal inside the 1 yard line, RB Isaiah Crowell got in, but OL Cameron Erving was flagged for holding, pushing it back to 1st-and-goal around the 10. Then, an illegal formation pushed it back to 1st-and-goal around the 15. Then, a sack pushed the ball back to the 25 yard line.
