UPDATE (11/4/15): It's official -- the team has announced that Manziel will start Thursday night against the Bengals. He is 1-0 as the team's starter this year. The original story from Tuesday appears below.
It's déjà vu all over again in Berea.
For a second straight week, the Cleveland Browns are delaying a decision at quarterback. Starting signalcaller Josh McCown is struggling with a rib injury, leaving backup Johnny Manziel waiting in the wings.
As head coach Mike Pettine said today during his late afternoon press conference, the team is preparing Manziel to start on Thursday night in Cincinnati, but McCown is not out of the picture yet.
"They're both taking the mentality that they're the starter," Pettine said. "We'll see where Josh is tonight."
The 36 year old admitted today he's experiencing a lot of pain as he tries to recover before Thursday.
"Obviously when you're dealing with ribs and stuff that affects breathing and stuff like that, yeah, sleeping's not the easiest thing,'' McCown said.
The veteran has not ruled himself out for Thursday. McCown will practice tonight before he and the team make a decision.
In the meantime, Manziel will ready himself for the spotlight on Thursday Night Football. Manziel's last start against the Bengals -- the first of his career -- did not go well. Manziel finished the 30-0 loss with a poor statline, completing 10-of-18 attempts for 80 yards and two interceptions.
As Pettine said during his presser, a decision will likely be made by tomorrow.
UPDATE: According to the injury report released Tuesday evening, Josh McCown did not practice.
