With the No. 14 pick in the DBN 2015 NFL Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...
Arik Armstead, DT, Oregon
The selection and write-up were made by Brocolis154033:
The Joe Philbin era at a glance is one of mediocrity with an overall record 23-25 and back to back 8-8 seasons. However, a closer look reveals a team that could be on the upswing for sustained success. Ryan Tannehill for all his detractors has progressed steadily in his three seasons and made great strides last season under OC Bill Lazor. Miami had a busy off-season cleaning house a bit by shipping away Mike Wallace and Dannell Ellerbe along with cutting lose Phillip Wheeler. The Dolphins were able to land arguably the biggest free agent in a decade or more in Suh while also adding new weapons in Kenny Stills and former Brown Jordan Cameron. Despite all the moves Miami enters the draft with plenty of positions that need to be addressed. In doing my roster breakdown I've identified CB, OG, LB, WR, and DT as the greatest positions of need.
So, given the way the draft has shaken out I'm going with the massive DT from Oregon Arik Armstead. I think he represents the best combination of value while filling a need. At 6'7 296 he should be a disruptive force in the pass game by just simply getting his hands up. Also, lining Armstead up next Suh and Wake should give him ample one on one opportunities and great chance for early success. Armstead is certainly more of a projection than a finished product but, given that talent he'd be surrounded by in MIA he should have a chance to find his way early on. I expect Arik to show flashes early in his first season but, don't expect him to reach his immense potential until year two or three. Other players in consideration for the pick were Shelton, Kendricks, Strong, Collins, and Scherff.
I'm surprised no one has taken Shelton by now. While it sounds fun for the Dolphins to add another strong piece to their defensive line, I think the commitment to Suh means Miami should focus their efforts on a different position, preferably on the offensive side of the ball.
The San Francisco 49ers are up next, led by Manly and Loving It.
