2015 NFL Mock Draft: Cleveland Browns Select NT Danny Shelton at No. 19

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 19 pick in the DBN 2015 NFL Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns select...

Danny Shelton, NT, Washington

The selection and write-up were made by Royce Groff:

The hard part is to not overthink this pick. and so having completed my round of electroshock therapy the Cleveland Browns select Washington Defensive Tackle Danny Shelton. Truth be told I don’t expect Shelton to be available out here at 19, but I have chosen to not second guess the obvious pick. Fundamentally this is a selection fitting the two draft concepts together: BPA and Need. As the team who performed worst against the run (per game) last season it is obvious that we have to shore up our defensive front and Shelton is widely regarded as the top DT remaining on the board. Most people have Shelton pegged as a NT but while I am no draft evaluator, I definitely respect the evaluation of Tim Miller:

	        st pn pr zn positions
D Shelton	7 9 9 8 WT9, NT8

Thankfully Shelton rates as highly as anyone available at the WT position - I guess we will have to make due with that. He has some holes in his game but he will provide 1-Gap value in the middle of the line. Moves pretty good for a fat guy he adds interior line pass rush threat. Adding Shelton to our already upgraded defense - following the addition of edge rushing threat Bud Dupree - will have opposing offenses laying on their backs all day.

Other players considered at this point include Eddie Goldman - who most assess as a lesser prospect, Some Obvious seeming OT candidates - but I thought it was hard to support a back-up OT (or any OL) in the first. I wouldn’t be surprised if Farmer goes that way - but I have to deal with you all dissecting this pick so I decided to stay away. Finally I seriously considered Breshad Perriman, Who I think is the WR prospect on the board with the highest ceiling.

This is a home run pick, and I'll fantasize for just a second that he is around at No. 19. Adding both Dupree and Shelton in the first round would bolster the Browns' front seven, playing into the philosophy that they will try to win games this year with good defense and a strong running game. The defense will collapse without more run support, and that's what Shelton can help improve.

The Philadelphia Eagles are up next, led by Matt Wood.
