2015 NFL Mock Draft: Indianapolis Colts Select DL Eddie Goldman at No. 29

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 29 pick in the DBN 2015 NFL Mock Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select...

Eddie Goldman, DL, Florida State

The selection and write-up were made by Mudville:

If I were the Colts right now, I would be entertaining some trades from teams wanting to move back up into the first round.  But absent any trade offers…

The Colts offense ranked 6th last year in points per game and 3d in yards per game.  With the addition of veteran offensive players via free agency (Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, and Todd Herremens), the Colts are likely to continue their offense prowess.

The defense on the other hand gave up the 19th most points per game and ranked 18th against the run.  We all remember how Blount torched them for 148 yards in the playoff game and they did lose starting DT Cory Redding to FA.  However, they have improved their front seven a little with the additions of Kendall Langford and LBs Nate Irving and Trent Cole, which will displace their leading sacker from last year (Newsome 6.5 sacks) to second team.  Yet, when you look at their depth chart, they only have 3 DE on their roster (Langford, and 2 undrafted rookies from last year).  Yet, I do not feel that there are any pure 3-4 DE worth the value of the pick here.

Therefore, I turn to best DL available in Goldman.  Some scouts and sites say he can eventually play end in a 3-4 scheme - but all agree that he is more of a run stopper than a pass rusher.  This is what the Colts need right now is some depth along their front line, someone that doesn't get pushed back, and I think Goldman can make an immediate impact helping to anchor that line of scrimmage.

Other players considered Eli Harold and Owamagbe Odighizuwa.

Back-to-back Florida State players get selected near the end of the first round -- I like it. Although the Colts weren't atrocious against the run last year, I like the talent they have offensively enough to where I think strengthening their defense in the first round is the right move, and Goldman is a quality player to help do just that.

The Green Bay Packers are up next, led by syndrome.
