With the third pick in the DBN 2015 NFL Mock Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...
Vic Beasley, DE/OLB, Clemson
The selection and write-up were made by Legoman0721:
I'm sticking with my first instinct here and grabbing the best edge rusher in the draft for a team that is hoping to follow the Seattle blueprint for success. Last year the Jags went heavy on the offensive side of the ball, and this offseason they have already added a top pass-catcher in Julius Thomas. With so much young talent on that side, it's hard to envision spending another high pick on offense.
On defense, they have some young pieces but they also counted heavily on 33-year-old Chris Clemons last year to fill the vaunted LEO spot. Adding Beasley gives them some rotational depth for this season and a long-term replacement for Clemons. While Beasley is a little undersized to be a traditional DE, playing the LEO spot in Gus Bradley's defense is perfectly suited to his abilities. Beasley is a massively talented and polished pass rusher, and given the right situation, he could have a rookie year like Aldon Smith's. This could be the kind of pick that keeps the Jacksonville defense strong for years to come and provides the foundation for their turnaround.
It was only Blake Bortles' first year in 2014, but it wasn't a good one, which has to make Jaguars fans fear they they took another bust at the quarterback position (Blaine Gabbert being the previous). I don't think Jacksonville can continue to invest in offensive talent this high up in the draft, so going defense, with a defensive-minded coach, is a path I support.
