The Cleveland Browns made no secret that veteran long snapper Christian Yount would have to fight to keep his job in 2015, either against Charley Hughlett or somebody else. As it turns out, the competition didn't even make it to training camp as the club waived Yount on Friday, dropping their roster to 88 players.
It was a quick spiral downward for Yount, as is often the case with long snappers. Once you lose it, you lose it. Heading into training camp last year, I had written the following: "There are no worries for Christian Yount again. He is now entering his fourth year with the club and has yet to blow a snap."
Yount ended up botching several snaps last year after he had re-signed with the team through 2017. Now, he ends up on a similar path as Ryan Pontbriand -- a near Pro Bowler one second, and cut the next. Hughlett would seem to have a grip on the job for now, but just like the kicker position, don't be surprised if other guys are added down the road. The team could even evaluate cuts from other teams at the end of training camp.
