CLEVELAND BROWNS - DAY 2 MINICAMP RECAP (6/17/15)
- Manziel Speaks: After practice on Wednesday, QB Johnny Manziel spoke with the media for the first time since his rehab stint ended. Browns.com published the entire transcript of the interview, but I think the general feeling is that he's trying to be sincere when he's basically saying he wants to lose the persona that made him a public figure for all of the wrong reasons. He is even ditching the "money sign," and says that it won't be coming back. I'm sure other teams will still taunt him with it after a sack, though, so there is no way of completely killing it.
Don't Forget Desir: Absences in mini-camp always allow for the replacement player to steal a couple of headlines. On Day 2, CB Justin Gilbert was excused from practice due to a family matter. Taking his spot with the first-team defense was CB Pierre Desir because CB Tramon Williams is still out nursing a minor injury. Per Kevin Jones of Browns.com, "In a competitive 11-on-11 session, Desir perfectly jumped an Andrew Hawkins out route to the sideline and nearly picked off the pass."
This is the right time for Desir to make an impression and continue showing that he's past his "redshirt" days -- that's what Cleveland did to him most of his rookie year in 2014. With how loaded Cleveland's secondary is, though, barring an injury, there just won't be many reps for Desir come the regular season.
McCown's Relationship: I've said before that one of, if not the reason, the Browns signed QB Josh McCown over QB Brian Hoyer this offseason was the fact that McCown is vocally more open to working with a younger quarterback and passing the torch on when the time is right. Head coach Mike Pettine was asked about the harmony at quarterback this year compared to last year, and he says that he "does sense it," with respect to there being more harmony. QB Johnny Manziel had high praise for his new veteran mentor too:
"I think he’s been awesome since the day I walked in. He’s a Texas guy. He’s from right down the road from where I was born and raised. We have a little bit of a connection there, and then I remember when I went on my visit to Tampa last year and meeting with (Buccaneers Head) Coach Lovie (Smith) and those guys there, he was extremely nice. I sat there and talked to him for probably 10 or 15 minutes during that visit. Then, to have him come in I felt a Texas guy, an east Texas guy, we were really similar in a lot of ways.
He’s been really cool, and we’ve been able to talk about a lot of things about back home. He’s been able to help me, obviously being a veteran, with coverages, with protections. He’s been through this quite a few times – new offense, new system. I think he’s really helped me a lot and been, like as you’ve seen out there, I think he’s been great for not only me but for Thad (Lewis) being in there, as well as Connor (Shaw), too."
- Injury Notes: The same suspects were on the bike brigade on Wednesday, except that OLB Nate Orchard was added to the mix and DL Xavier Cooper was back after missing minicamp on Tuesday with an illness. FS Tashaun Gipson remained out with a hamstring injury.
- Brownies: LT Joe Thomas and DE Desmond Bryant sat out of practice with the old "veteran rest days." ... WR Dwayne Bowe has been displaying good body positioning as a receiver this offseason, and offensive coordinator John DeFelippo seems ready and willing to call plays that utilize Bowe's strengths. ... DL Billy Winn was reportedly worked into the first-team defense on Wednesday.
The Browns will be back on the practice field Thursday for Day 3 of minicamp.
