Fan Perception: What We Learned About the Browns' Quarterbacks Heading Into Training Camp

In each of our training camp previews, we conduct a poll at the end of the post. The polls are intended to gauge fan perception about certain players or roles on the Cleveland Browns heading into training camp. They help set the initial expectations that fans have on certain players. Here is a summary of each of those polls for the quarterback position:

QB Poll 1

Last year, fans were supportive of Brian Hoyer being the team's starting quarterback to begin the year. This year, the majority of fans still aren't ready to commit to Johnny Manziel as the future quarterback of the franchise. Manziel will face an uphill battle to win the fans, coaching staff, and his teammates over. For there to be this little faith in a first-round quarterback in just his sophomore year, when he's only made two career starts, is not good. [Read Part 1 of the QB Preview]

QB Poll

I'm surprised to see that over half the fans think the Browns should utilize a roster spot on a No. 3 quarterback. My assumption is that there is a fear that Manziel isn't ready, so somebody else (in this case, Connor Shaw) should be the No. 2 quarterback. And, you can't cut Manziel, so that's why we'd be carrying three quarterbacks.

I disagree. We can get by with Shaw on the practice squad again -- if nobody signed him away from Cleveland last year, why would they suddenly do it this year? That roster spot will be valuable to keep an extra cornerback (Pierre Desir or Charles Gaines) or defensive lineman (Billy Winn, Ishmaa'ily Kitchen) who might otherwise be on the bubble. If Josh McCown goes down and Manziel still isn't ready, we can live with Manziel coming in as a backup for one game. [Read Part 2 of the QB Preview]
