Redskins vs. Browns: Analyzing the Snap Counts (Defense)

Looking at the defensive snap counts in the Browns' 20-17 loss to the Redskins.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today, we analyzed the snap counts for the Cleveland Browns offense in their first preseason game against the Washington Redskins. Now, it's time to turn our attention to the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive Line

Pos Player Plays % Stats
DL Christian Tupou 24 36% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined).
DL Armonty Bryant 23 35% No stats registered.
DL Jamie Meder 23 35% 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 forced fumble.
DL Ishmaa'ily Kitchen 19 29% 1 tackle (1 combined).
DL Jacobbi McDaniel 17 26% 1 assist (1 combined).
DL Dylan Wynn 17 26% 1 assist (1 combined). 1 quarterback hit.
DL Xavier Cooper 16 24% 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit.
DL John Hughes 16 24% 1 tackle (1 combined).
DL Desmond Bryant 14 21% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined).
DL Danny Shelton 14 21% 1 assist (1 combined).
DL Randy Starks 13 20% No stats registered.

A lot of my attention was focused on Danny Shelton, and I'm already blown away with how good he is. Remember, when I say I'm impressed with him, that doesn't mean he's going to be Ndamukong Suh overnight or something. But, the fact that he looks this good already in his first preseason game means that his physical talent is going to translate well to the NFL. Xavier Cooper logged a sack, something we'll hopefully be seeing a lot of as an inside pass rusher during the regular season.

Outside Linebacker

Pos Player Plays % Stats
OLB Nate Orchard 31 47% 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 quarterback hit.
OLB Scott Solomon 25 38% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined).
OLB Mike Reilly 21 32% 3 tackles (3 combined).
OLB Paul Kruger 16 24% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 1 quarterback hit.

Barkevious Mingo still has a few weeks before he returns, so one of the things I want to rewind and watch again is how well Nate Orchard and Scott Solomon played, and whether they were liabilities against the run or not.

Inside Linebacker

Pos Player Plays % Stats
ILB Tank Carder 33 50% 1 tackle, 3 assists (4 combined). 1 fumble recovery.
ILB Hayes Pullard 32 48% 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
ILB Christian Kirksey 25 38% 3 tackles, 3 assists (6 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
ILB Karlos Dansby 18 27% 2 tackles, 2 assists (4 combined).
ILB Craig Robertson 17 26% 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
ILB Moise Fokou 7 11% 1 assist (1 combined).

Karlos Dansby had a nice tackle on third-and-short, but like the outside linebackers, I'm going to have to review the game again before I can judge the individual players. Chris Kirksey also blew up a screen pass behind the line of scrimmage.

Safety

Pos Player Plays % Stats
S Ibrehaim Campbell 49 74% 2 tackles, 3 assists (5 combined).
S Jordan Poyer 30 45% 2 tackles (2 combined).
S Landon Feichter 18 27% 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
S Tashaun Gipson 18 27% 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined).
S Donte Whitner 18 27% 1 tackle (1 combined).

I think it was Tashaun Gipson who made a great open field tackle on a 4th-and-1 run that went for a big gain.

Cornerback

Pos Player Plays % Stats
CB Johnson Bademosi 41 62% 3 tackles (3 combined).
CB Charles Gaines 40 61% 3 tackles (3 combined).
CB Justin Gilbert 37 56% 1 tackle (1 combined).
CB Kendall James 20 30% 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined).
CB Tramon Williams 18 27% 1 tackle (1 combined).
CB K'Waun Williams 14 21% 1 quarterback hit.
CB Joe Rankin 2 3% No stats registered.

The story of the day was the play of Justin Gilbert early on, and not in a good way. He let a receiver free deep, and then missed a tackle that led to another big play. When the regular season rolls around, Gilbert might not even be active on gameday.
