Bills vs. Browns: Analyzing the Snap Counts (Defense)

Looking at the defensive snap counts in the Browns' 11-10 loss to the Bills.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Below, we analyze the snap counts on defense for the Cleveland Browns' Week 2 preseason match against the Buffalo Bills.

Defensive Line

Pos Player Plays % Stats

DL Ishmaa'ily Kitchen 14

DL Jamie Meder 13
21%
1 tackle (1 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
DL Xavier Cooper 11
17%
2 tackles (2 combined). 2 sacks.

Despite only receiving 11 snaps, Xavier Cooper registered two sacks, giving him three in two games. We aren't going to give Cooper a ton of snaps during the regular season games, but he'll be one of our best assets in sub packages for his pass rushing ability. The playing time was distributed pretty evenly across the line this week.

Outside Linebacker

Pos Player Plays % Stats
OLB Nate Orchard 26
41%
3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined).
OLB Scott Solomon 26
41%
2 tackles (2 combined).
OLB Paul Kruger 21
33%
3 tackles, 2 assists (5 combined). 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 1 quarterback hit.
OLB Everette Brown 17
27%
1 tackle (1 combined).
OLB Mike Reilly 16
25%
No stats registered.

Newly-signed Everette Brown got involved in the action, even seeing one more snap than Mike Reilly. Paul Kruger was an absolute animal during the portion of the game he played in -- he's revved up and ready for the regular season.

Inside Linebacker

Pos Player Plays % Stats
ILB Karlos Dansby 27
43%
3 tackles (3 combined).
ILB Hayes Pullard 23
37%
No stats registered.
ILB Christian Kirksey 22
35%
1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined).
ILB Craig Robertson 18
29%
3 tackles (3 combined).
ILB Tank Carder 18
29% 1 tackle (1 combined).
ILB Moise Fokou 18
29% 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 sack, 1 forced fumble.

Moise Fokou got the sack on E.J. Manuel near the end of the game (fumble that couldn't be advanced by Buffalo). It's a little surprising to see Karlos Dansby play as many snaps as he did.

Safety

Pos Player Plays % Stats
S Ibraheim Campbell 48
76%
3 tackles (3 combined).
S Landon Feichter 42
67%
6 tackles (6 combined).
S Donte Whitner 21
33%
1 tackle (1 combined).
S Jordan Poyer 15
24%
2 assists (2 combined).

With Jordan Poyer leaving the game (concussion) and Tashaun Gipson already out, that meant the team only had three safeties available the rest of the game. Ibraheim Campbell and Landon Feichter were the benefactors of the additional playing time.

Cornerback

Pos Player Plays % Stats
CB Kendall James 37
59%
1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Johnson Bademosi 33
52%
3 tackles (3 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Charles Gaines 32
51%
No stats registered.
CB Tramon Williams 21
33%
1 tackle (1 combined).
CB Joe Rankin 18
29%
No stats registered.
CB Aaron Ross
8
13%

I thought Joe Rankin had good coverage on the first fourth down play for the Bills, which was ruled pass interference. The cornerbacks didn't play great, but didn't look overwhelmed considering all the reports we had heard during the joint practice sessions. Nonetheless, I can't wait to get Joe Haden, K'Waun Williams, Pierre Desir, Justin Gilbert, and Robert Nelson back.
