Below, we analyze the snap counts on defense for the Cleveland Browns' Week 3 preseason match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Defensive Line
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
DL | Armonty Bryant | 24 | 44% | 2 tackles (2 combined). |
DL | Desmond Bryant | 21 | 38% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (1 combined). 1.5 sacks, 1 tackle for loss, 3 quarterback hits. |
DL | Billy Winn | 18 | 33% | No stats registered. |
DL | Danny Shelton | 16 | 29% | 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 tackle for loss. |
DL | Randy Starks | 15 | 27% | No stats registered. |
DL | Xavier Cooper | 13 | 24% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
DL | Jamie Meder | 13 | 24% | 3 tackles, 2 assists (5 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit. |
DL | John Hughes | 13 | 24% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
DL | Phil Taylor |
11 | 20% | No stats registered. |
DL | Dylan Wynn | 7 | 13% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
DL | Jacobbi McDaniel | 6 | 11% | No stats registered. |
The difference between this unit last year and this year is remarkable, and I am still giving Danny Shelton the credit for the turnaround. Desmond Bryant looks like a man possessed out there, and with the second unit, Jamie Meder has been giving maximum effort. It's interesting to see Armonty Bryant with the most playing time. I didn't see him once, but maybe he'll show up after I review the tape.
Outside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
OLB | Paul Kruger | 28 | 51% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 0.5 sack, 1 quarterback hit. |
OLB | Mike Reilly | 20 | 36% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit. |
OLB | Scott Solomon | 18 | 33% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 tackle for loss. |
OLB | Everette Brown | 14 | 25% | 1 assist (1 combined). |
Nate Orchard was a late scratch, and Scott Solomon seemed to step up with a pretty good game. The depth at the position was a little thinner this week, but the Browns might have made up for it by being in the nickel a little more often.
Inside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
ILB | Christian Kirksey | 26 | 47% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 1 quarterback hit. |
ILB | Craig Robertson | 25 | 45% | 2 tackles (2 combined). |
ILB | Karlos Dansby | 23 | 42% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). |
ILB | Tank Carder | 20 | 36% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 1 tackle for loss. |
ILB | Hayes Pullard | 20 | 36% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
Not much to comment on here, except that all five inside linebackers received relatively equal playing time in the third preseason game.
Safety
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
S | Ibraheim Campbell | 32 | 58% | 4 tackles, 1 assist (5 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit. |
S | Donte Whitner | 23 | 42% | 2 tackles (2 combined). |
S | De'Ante Saunders | 23 | 42% | 2 tackles (2 combined). |
S | Landon Feichter | 21 | 38% | 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit. |
S | Tashaun Gipson |
11 | 20% | No stats registered. |
Even though the coaches really like Jordan Poyer, I think there's a good chance that Ibraheim Campbell could be playing himself into that third safety role that Jim Leonhard filled last year. Tashaun Gipson played three series and then exited.
Cornerback
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
CB | Johnson Bademosi | 31 | 56% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended. |
CB | Kendall James | 31 | 56% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
CB | Tramon Williams | 23 | 42% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended. |
CB | Charles Gaines | 16 | 29% | 1 interception, 2 passes defended. |
CB | Pierre Desir | 12 | 22% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended. |
CB | Joe Haden |
11 | 20% | No stats registered. |
CB | Joe Rankin |
10 | 18% | No stats registered. |
CB | Aaron Ross |
10 | 18% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended. |
Like Gipson, Joe Haden played three series before exiting. Charles Gaines was having a heck of a day filling in for the injured K'Waun Williams, but had to leave with a hamstring injury. Pierre Desir also had a couple of good plays before leaving with a concussion. The Browns are going to have to keep more defensive backs on the roster than usual for the fourth preseason game because of the team's injuries at the position.
