Browns Make Several Injury-Related Moves to Get Roster Down to 79 Players

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

After cutting or terminating six players on Monday, the Cleveland Browns started Tuesday by making five injury-related roster moves to get down to 79 players. They will have to make four additional moves, likely all cuts, to get down to 75 players by 4:00 PM ET today.

Placed on Reserve/Injured:

  • QB Connor Shaw (right thumb) - Suffered a thumb injury during the first preseason game. He will probably stay on IR all season with a shot at being in camp next year.

  • OL Michael Bowie (shoulder) - After spending all season on IR last year, it was thought that Bowie could compete for the starting right tackle spot in 2015. He never impressed, though, and placing him on the IR was a move I called during my most recent roster projection.

Placed on Reserve/Non-Football Injury:

  • RB Glenn Winston (knee)
  • TE Randall Telfer (foot)
  • DB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (knee)

Per the Browns, "Players placed on reserve/non-football injury are eligible to return to practice anytime between Week 6-11. Once the player returns to practice, he must be activated within three weeks or they will remain on the reserve list. Players placed in reserve/injured are out for the season."

Ekpre-Olomu will probably miss the entire season. Telfer would have a shot at returning, as would Winston, but whether the team will need their talents at the expense of another player's roster spot remains to be seen.

Bragging Rights: If we're keeping score, none of the 11 players removed from the roster so far were on my list for projected the players expected to be on the Browns' 53-man roster.
