Below, we analyze the snap counts on defense for the Cleveland Browns' Week 1 game against the New York Jets.
Defensive Line
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
DL | Danny Shelton | 40 | 66% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). |
DL | Armonty Bryant | 37 | 61% | 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined). |
DL | Desmond Bryant | 37 | 61% | 0 tackles, 4 assists (4 combined). |
DL | Randy Starks | 31 | 51% | 1 tackle, 3 assists (4 combined). |
DL | Jamie Meder | 27 | 44% | 0 tackles, 2 assists (2 combined). |
DL | John Hughes | 25 | 41% | 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined). |
I'll have to re-watch the game to see how well Danny Shelton performed, but he played 2/3 of the snaps this week so they don't have an issue using him. Even though Armonty Bryant's snap count is high, I think most of those snaps came as an outside linebacker due to Scott Solomon's injury. The rest of the defensive line lacked playmaking -- where was Desmond Bryant after a great preseason?
Outside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
OLB | Paul Kruger | 57 | 93% | 2 tackles, 2 assists (4 combined). 1 quarterback hit. |
OLB |
Barkevious Mingo |
13 | 21% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 1 tackle for loss, 1 pass defended. |
OLB | Scott Solomon | 2 | 3% | 1 assist (1 combined). |
Paul Kruger couldn't get to the quarterback very often. I'll have to see if that was on him or if the Jets accounted for him since he was the team's only healthy pass rusher really. Barkevious Mingo played far fewer snaps than I thought he did after Scott Solomon's injury to open the game.
Inside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
ILB | Karlos Dansby | 61 | 100% | 4 tackles, 3 assists (7 combined). 2 tackles for loss. |
ILB | Christian Kirksey | 25 | 41% | 2 assists (2 combined). |
ILB | Craig Robertson | 23 | 38% | 1 tackle, 3 assists (4 combined). 1 pass defended. |
Karlos Dansby appeared to have a good game, as did Craig Robertson. I thought I saw Christian Kirksey miss on a run play or two, but maybe my eyes were deceiving me.
Safety
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
S | Donte Whitner | 61 | 100% | 4 tackles, 6 assists (10 combined). |
S | Tashaun Gipson | 60 | 98% | 2 tackles, 3 assists (5 combined). 1 interception, 1 pass defended. |
S |
Jordan Poyer |
9 | 15% | 2 assists (2 combined). 1 pass defended. |
Jordan Poyer broke up a pass on the first series. Perhaps the momentum-changing play of the game came when Tashaun Gipson fumbled his interception to Brandon Marshall, which allowed the Jets to put their first points on the board and start getting into a rhythm offensively. Gipson also guessed wrong on Ryan Fitzpatrick's touchdown pass to end the first half.
Cornerback
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
CB |
Joe Haden |
60 | 98% | 4 tackles, 2 assists (6 combined). |
CB | Tramon Williams | 59 | 97% | 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined). |
CB |
K'Waun Williams |
43 | 70% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). |
This was an ugly game for Joe Haden, who seems to be falling into a bad habit of not delivering early on in the season. Usually there are a couple of redeeming plays for Haden, but there weren't any this week. Ryan Fitzpatrick went after him when he wanted and succeeded. K'Waun Williams also didn't seem to have his finest showing. The secondary missed the majority of training camp as they healed to get ready for Week 1, and it seemed to show as they weren't prepared for the speed of regular season football.
