After the Browns went three-and-out on their first offensive drive of the game, New England and Tom Brady took over. He promptly led the Patriots down the field, incuding a big catch-and-run by TE Rob Gronkowski. RB LeGarrette Blount finished the drive from a yard out to give New England a 7-0 lead.
The Browns responded with a grind-em-out series, capped with an 11-yard touchdown pass from QB Cody Kessler to WR Andrew Hawkins to tie the game at 7-7. Brady led the Patriots right back down the field, this time for a checkdown 7-yard touchdown pass to TE Martellus Bennett to give New England a 14-7 lead.
On Cleveland’s next series, back up in their own territory, a free blitzer came right away at Kessler. He tried to pitch it back to RB Duke Johnson, but the backward pass sailed out of the end zone for a safety, making it a 16-7 lead. That’s where we stand heading to the second quarter of play.
