Below, we analyze the snap counts and stats on defense for the Cleveland Browns' Week 15 game against the Buffalo Bills.
Defensive Line
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
DL | Jamie Meder | 50 | 75% | 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined). 1 QH. |
DL | Danny Shelton | 48 | 72% | 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined). 1 QH. |
DL | Emmanuel Ogbah | 44 | 66% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 sack, 1 QH, 1 TFL. |
DL | Stephen Paea | 28 | 42% | No stats registered. |
DL | Gabe Wright |
25 | 37% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
DL | Carl Nassib | 16 | 24% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
Sorry, but nobody gets a gold star on defense this week. The Bills ran for 280 yards on 40 carries. You don't even have to be good at math to know that is 7.0 yards per carry. Ogbah picked up another sack to get to 5.5 on the season. If I'm being optimistic, even with the losing, him getting to the quarterback will build his confidence. Anybody that can point to tangible progress at least has a shred of something to feel good about.
Outside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
OLB | Jamie Collins |
59 | 88% | 4 tackles, 1 assist (5 combined). 1 TFL. |
OLB | Cam Johnson |
44 | 66% | 4 tackles (4 combined). 1 pass defended. |
OLB | Joe Schobert |
12 | 18% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). |
This was a disappointing day for Collins, who looked like an ordinary player. What happened to the stout defensive effort we saw a few weeks ago in the first half vs. Baltimore? Johnson got a lot more playing time than second outside linebackers have been getting since Collins arrived and Ogbah went to defensive end.
Inside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
ILB | Christian Kirksey | 67 | 100% | 8 tackles, 1 assist (9 combined). |
ILB | Demario Davis | 54 | 81% | 8 tackles, 2 assists (10 combined). 1 QH, 1 TFL. |
ILB | Tank Carder |
7 |
10% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
Davis' playing time was back up this week after being primarily a reserve since the Collins trade. Carder got a few reps in.
Safety
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
S | Ed Reynolds |
67 | 100% | 5 tackles, 2 assists (7 combined). |
S | Ibraheim Campbell |
53 | 79% | 6 tackles, 1 assist (7 combined). |
S | Tramon Williams | 15 | 22% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
S | Tracy Howard |
1 | 1% | 1 assist (1 combined). |
I know I keep bragging about the guy, but I saw several more plays of Reynolds either successfully making the tackle as the last line of defense, or shooting in for an open field tackle. He's a keeper in my book.
Cornerback
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
CB | Joe Haden | 59 | 88% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
CB | Jamar Taylor |
56 | 84% | 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined). 1 pass defended. |
CB | Briean Boddy-Calhoun | 25 | 37% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
CB | Marcus Burley |
7 | 10% | 1 pass defended. |
The Browns' cornerbacks did their jobs. Sammy Watkins had 1 catch for 10 yards and Robert Woods was held to 1 catch for 5 yards. Charles Clay did most of the damage at tight end, and a couple of the team's other few catches were in zone coverage.
