2016 NFL Mock Draft: Cleveland Browns Select QB Jared Goff at No. 2

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

With the second pick in the 2016 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns select...

Jared Goff, QB, California

The selection and write-up were made by Robo Dawg:

Jared Goff is one of the two most-talked about QB prospects in this year's draft and ultimately who the Browns decide to select here.  He operated in an offense that required pro-style reads and drop backs, making him the most ready to start an NFL game day 1 of his rookie career.  His accuracy is superlative and he has enough arm strength to stretch the defense.

The Browns may have been concerned about Goff's 'small' hands, however his ability to defeat Pep Hamilton's water soaked ball demonstrated not only his grip strength, but his composure to deal with unexpected situations. One other concern the Browns may have about Goff is his relatively lean frame; Cleveland has been preparing for his arrival this offseason by bolstering their line through the release of two offensive starters.  All jesting aside, Goff is used to playing for a less than mediocre college line and it only gets better when your left side is protected by future HOF LT Joe Thomas.

The Cleveland Browns seem to have a new cultural history where the QB position is manned by a continuous rotation of 'has-beens,' free agent flyers and failed draft picks.  Cleveland attempts to address this instability by creating more roster instability, enabling a three-way QB competition between McCown, RGIII and Goff.  But if Goff is who Cleveland thinks he his, he will win the job outright and provide a generation of exceptional play...small hands and all.

This is the same pick I made for DBN in the SB Nation Writers Mock Draft, so I can't complain. I'm still generally unhappy about having to take a quarterback, but that is more indicative of me being tired of seeing failure after failure at the position. In order to break the trend, we can't fall back on what past quarterbacks have done -- we just have to believe that one of these players will finally be the guy.

The San Diego Chargers are up next, led by Crawford_T.
