2016 NFL Mock Draft: San Diego Chargers Select DB Jalen Ramsey at No. 3

With the departure of Eric Weddle the Chargers have a large whole to fill at safety, which is the spot Ramsey seems likely to play in the NFL. Right now the Chargers have some talent at CB with Jason Verrett (when healthy) and Casey Hayward, but are currently have Jahleel Addae as their only starting safety. In a division that features talented wide-outs like Amari Cooper, Demaryius Thomas, and Jeremy Maclin that's not good enough.

The Chargers do have other needs at OL and DL, but I felt Tunsil was the only tackle worth taking over a player of Ramsey's caliber. With the deep DL class in this draft the Chargers should be able to get a good player to help at that position later in the draft (signing Brandon Mebane in FA helps too).

Ramsey should be able to start immediately and while shouldn't be expected to match Weddle's production as a rookie, his excellent athleticism should allow him to make his share of plays for San Diego.

It's probably too early for them to do this, but part of me wonders if the Chargers would consider drafting one of the top two quarterbacks this year to sit for two or three more years behind Philip Rivers. If the Chargers expect to contend during Rivers' reign, then by the time someone like Wentz is ready to take over, the idea is that he's playing for a contender. That thought aside, Ramsey seems like a lock to me at No. 3.
