2016 NFL Mock Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars Select DE DeForest Buckner at No. 5

With the fifth pick in the 2016 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...

DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon

The selection and write-up were made by Bob Stalnaker:

We feel good about our running game as T.J. Yeldon is coming along fine and we also added Chris Ivory at RB. Quarterback Blake Bortles is everything we hoped for and we have two wide receivers that combined for over 2,400 receiving in 2015 in Robinson and undrafted free agent Hurns.  It is the defensive side where we are going to concentrate our top picks in the 2016 draft.  The Cowboys taking Myles Jack at #4 has caused us to shift to a backup plan for our selection. Jack was the player we wanted and had the versatility we looked for as a possible two position player.  We added Malik Jackson in free agency, who will bolster our defensive line in a big way.  A big question is if Dante Fowler Jr., last year's #3 overall pick, can come back at full strength and be the player we projected him to be at defensive end.

With the #5 pick, the Jaguars select DeForest Buckner, defensive end from Oregon.  Scheme wise, this isn't the best fit for Buckner as a 4-3 defensive tackle.  Joey Bosa would have been the better fit at DE or we thought about Leonard Floyd at linebacker. However, we are intrigued by Buckner's upside which we believe is stronger than Bosa's and we also like his versatility, as he will be fully capable of playing in a 4-3. Should Fowler have problems, Buckner will slide to the defensive end.  Buckner should have a good immediate impact with the defensive line, the entire front seven being our most critical need.  Overall, disappointed in that Jack was taken but we will end up with a very strong defensive line with added flexibility and what we hope will be one of the NFL's best defensive lines in the following year and Fowler healthy.  We are going to look at the best linebackers available on our Big Board for the 2nd round and later a cornerback, even with the free agency addition of Prince Amukamara.

I felt awful for the Jaguars last year when Dante Fowler went down, as it made it feel like a wasted draft season in a sense for a Jacksonville defense that was in desperate need of some young talent. Having Fowler back and then adding Buckner can inject some high-caliber youth up front.

The Baltimore Ravens are up next, led by pt_999.
