QB Connor Shaw broke the news on Twitter that he has been released by the Cleveland Browns:
@Browns Thankful for the two years spent in CLE. Learned & grew a lot! Ready to see where God guides my family next!
— Connor Shaw (@cmshaw9) June 30, 2016
The team later confirmed the news. When we published part 2 of our quarterback preview earlier this week, we gave Shaw the worst roster odds of making the 53-man roster at 1%. Still, that didn’t prevent fans from preferring him to make the club in some capacity over QB Austin Davis.
The Browns have not yet announced a corresponding roster move, so it is unclear if they are finding another young quarterback to compete, or if they’ll just head in to camp with four quarterbacks. Four quarterbacks would seem likely; with five, you’re just diluting the reps a bit too much.
Bottlegate on Twitter pointed out that every quarterback who started for the Browns in 2014 (Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel, and Shaw) are no longer with the team:
Every quarterback who started a game for the Browns during the 2014 season is no longer on the team. Not even mad, that's incredible
