In a video report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, he lit the fire about the Browns having some interest in former Jets QB Geno Smith.
Rapoport said that Smith met with the New York Giants this weekend and that the meeting went extremely well. The Giants are looking for somebody to back up veteran QB Eli Manning, and Smith wouldn’t mind waiting in the wings. However, Rapoport added that the San Diego Chargers and the Cleveland Browns have also shown interest, and Smith is “weighing his options” since he’d be able to compete for the starting job in Cleveland.
Cleveland will likely need a veteran quarterback after parting ways with QB Robert Griffin III and QB Josh McCown this offseason. While QB Brock Osweiler is currently on the roster for a hefty $16 million cap hit, it is unlikely the team retains him much longer, which would only leave QB Cody Kessler and QB Kevin Hogan on the roster, two players who are entering their second season.
The general vibe is that Browns fans do not want to see Smith in a Browns uniform, and I’m of that same mentality, which makes me hope the Giants end up signing him so we can put that possibility to bed.
