Browns have already held private workouts with QBs Patrick Mahomes and DeShone Kizer

The mystery may have been solved.

If you recall, when the Cleveland Browns’ top brass decided to skip QB Deshaun Watson’s pro day at Clemson last week, the under-the-radar nugget was that it was because Hue Jackson and company were holding a private workout for a quarterback.

Friday morning, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that at least two teams — the Chargers and the Browns — have already worked out Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes.

Mahome’s valuation is all over the place, but last month, DBN’s Mike Krupka did as thorough of a scouting report on him as you can possibly do. His pro day is next week.

Another previously unreported private workout the Browns had was with QB DeShone Kizer.

The fact that Cleveland kept these private workouts out of the news for at least a few days, considering today’s digital age, is...commendable? Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer also reported, via a league source, that the Browns “like Mahomes better than Kizer.”

Despite already having worked out Kizer, the Browns sent pro day scout Colton Chapple to watch his pro day on Thursday:
