2017 NFL Mock Draft: New York Jets Select S Jamal Adams at No. 6

With the 6th pick in the 2017 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the New York Jets select...

Jamal Adams, S, LSU

The selection and write-up were made by jdreyfuss:

The Jets have major needs across their secondary, at edge rusher, and at quarterback. Signing Josh McCown is a sign that they believe they can develop one of the young QBs already on the roster or wait until next season for their answer. Outside of quarterback, the two best players available are Adams and DL Jonathan Allen. While it wouldn’t be out of character for Mike Maccagnan to take another interior pass rusher, recent heavy investments into the line have borne fruit while similar investments into the secondary have failed.

The Jets have to replace at least one of their starting safeties. Marcus Gilchrist is a converted cornerback who relies on his recovery speed and is coming off a career-altering injury. Calvin Pryor simply hasn't lived up to his talent. Adams is a full-size, rangy safety with good coverage instincts and strong technique for both form and power tackling. While he’s best suited as a traditional coverage-oriented strong safety, he can play centerfield. His versatility will allow the team to evaluate both incumbent safeties and cut whichever one is worse at his one-dimensional skill.

Pokorny: There are too many top defensive players for these quarterback-needy teams to pass up on, and I think each of them feel a quarterback will still be there for them to try out in round two. There are differing opinions on who is the better safety between Adams and Hooker, but here that doesn’t matter — and I also agree with not making another investment on the defensive interior.

The Los Angeles Chargers are up next, led by unoservix.
