With the 12th pick in the 2017 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns select...

Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina

The selection and write-up were made by mrwhitman:

The Cleveland Browns had 7 players attempt a pass during the 2016 campaign, 5 being actual quarterbacks, 1 wide receiver, and RB Duke Johnson attempted a single pass for an incompletion. That passing crew put up 3,683 yards and 15 touchdowns alongside 14 interceptions good for 28th in passing. For a comparison, 18 NFL quarterbacks had more passing yards than the entire Browns “passers,” last season. The Browns have to take a quarterback again this year and once again in the 1st round. They will continue taking quarterbacks until they find the right one. The 2017 attempt will be the signal caller out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who played for NE Ohio’s Mentor High School and was the 2012 Mr. Football in the state of Ohio. Trubisky also states that the Browns are his favorite NFL team.

Trubisky only started 13 games in his UNC career setting the UNC single-season record for passing yards (3,748), touchdowns (30) and total offense (4,056). He also holds the UNC 2nd best ever single-game passing performance (453 against Pitt). He ranked 5th in the country with a 68.0 completion percentage while being a dual threat, rushing for 8 total touchdowns in his career and 5 scores during his final season in Chapel Hill. Trubisky measured in at the NFL Combine at 6’2” and 222 lbs while running a 4.67, 40-yard sprint, having the 4th best dash among QBs at this year’s NFL talent evaluating event.

This pick makes sense for the Browns due to need and best player available based on the DBN Big Board. Had Jonathan Allen, DT from Alabama not been drafted one pick before to New Orleans, he would had been the pick easily for me. I also considered Dalvin Cook the former Florida State running back but could not pull the trigger on a (RB) luxury pick at the 12th overall pick. The running back surplus is deep this draft season and with numerous picks in the Top 100, Hue & Co. can address that position later if they wish. Marlon Humphrey, the CB from Alabama, was a strong consideration and his stock is rising, some teams already see him as a Top 15 pick and possibly a Top 10 for secondary needy teams.

Overall, the Browns need a stable long-term answer at quarterback. Will Mitchell Trubisky be the QBOTF in Cleveland over the next decade? Only time will tell. One thing is for certain, if he is not the future and he is a bust, then another high pick will be used on quarterback until they do get it right.

Pokorny: One thing you are definitely not going to see me do is complain about this pick, considering I also took Trubisky in the SB Nation Writer’s Mock Draft. It might be a little boring for those of you who aren’t quite in the Trubisky camp, but I stand by my approval of a Garrett-Trubisky draft with the first two picks.

The Arizona Cardinals are up next, led by Crawford_T.
