CBS Sports announced its “NFL on CBS” broadcast pairings for the 2017 season on Wednesday, and in the process managed also to make a little history. CBS has paired Beth Mowins with Jay Feely as part of their eight teams that will handle play-by-play and analyst duties, making Mowins the first woman since Gayle Sierens in 1987 to call an NFL game. The Mowins-Feely team has also been assigned to the Cleveland Browns’ Week 3 contest, a road game against the Indianapolis Colts on September 24.
Though the Browns-Colts game won’t be Mowins’ first for her NFL career—that would be the second of two ESPN Monday Night Football games on September 11 when she and Rob Ryan will handle the Denver Broncos hosting the Los Angeles Chargers—it will be her first for CBS. Mowins and Feely are also one of five new broadcast teams the network has paired up for the 2017 season.
Mowins has extensive experience in the play-by-play arena, having worked in that capacity with various sports for ESPN since 1994. She began calling college football games for the Worldwide Leader in 2005 and has also served as a play-by-play analyst for Oakland Raiders preseason games since 2015.
The CBS broadcast pairings for the Browns’ first four games of the 2017 season are:
- Week 1, Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (1PM et; 9/10/2017): Greg Gumble, Trent Green, Jamie Erdahl
- Week 2, Browns at Baltimore Ravens (1PM et; 9/17/2017): Andrew Catalon, James Lofton, Steve Tasker
- Week 3, Browns at Indianapolis Colts (1PM et; 9/24/2017): Beth Mowins, Jay Feely
- Week 4, Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals (1PM et; 10/1/2017): Spero Dedes, Adam Archuleta
