Browns trade Cody Kessler to Jaguars

NFL: Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns traded QB Cody Kessler on Wednesday to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a conditional 7th round pick in 2019. Kessler has the opportunity to backup Jacksonville starter Blake Bortles after the departure of Chad Henne to Kansas City.

Kessler’s departure mirrors the departure of his former advocate, Sashi Brown, who drafted Cody in the 3rd round of his inaugural year as GM. Kessler was supposed to bring accuracy, savvy and leadership. After Cody was picked 93rd in the 2016 draft, Hue Jackson told us to “trust him... the guy has had a tremendous career... Cody Kessler is the guy for us.”

After two disappointing years, plagued by injury and the inability to effectively institute Hue Jackson’s vertical offense, Kessler has been made expendable by the additions of Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton. Kevin Hogan is now the sole returning QB from last year’s 0-16 campaign.
