Do the Buccaneers get the next Jalen Ramsey all the way at No. 7?

With the seventh pick of the 2018 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select...

Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama

The selection and write-up were made by Ezweav:

When glancing at Tampa Bay’s roster/depth chart, you quickly discover that there are not a great deal of “holes.” They have completely rebuilt the offensive line into a team-strength, so even were Quentin Nelson available here he wouldn’t be necessary. RB isn’t terribly strong with the departure of Doug Martin, but with Saquon Barkley off the board, a plethora of quality 2nd-tier options, and not-nothing at the position currently with Jacquizz Rodgers and Peyton Barber, the Bucs don’t need to reach for one here. At WR & TE they are stacked.

On defense, the addition of Jason Pierre Paul & Vinny Curry this offseason (and with Noah Spence already on the roster) pretty well mitigates the need to go EDGE here, though some interior help for Gerald McCoy could turn the line from good to great. Thus, gave strong consideration to Vita Vea or Maurice Hurst here, but alas decided to go with who I would consider to be the best prospect left who will also fill a significant role for Tampa Bay.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is kind of an odd prospect, as the tape shows him to be tremendous both in coverage and playing the run. However, he’s knocked because he spent the majority of his college career playing Nickel-Corner for the Crimson Tide, and the slot is not exactly where you take a guy with a top 10 pick. Yes, he did play some on the outside and in the back-end, but not enough to say definitively that he will be able to excel there at the next level, and at very least some time may be needed for him to get there.

The Bucs therefore become a good fit, as they have solid starting CBs in Vernon Hargraeves and (the ageless) Brent Grimes. Their presence would allow Fitzpatrick to ease into his NFL career, and be able to contribute immediately in the slot, giving Tampa Bay a formidable secondary combo. Yes, the safety situation is less than ideal there, which may allow for him to flex into the deep backfield should the situation call for it. He’s a talented, versatile player, and the Bucs could absolutely use one of those on their defense.

Pokorny: “The Buccaneers would further bolster their starting group of cornerbacks, perhaps allowing them to carve out a niche in the NFC, albeit with a questionable safety position.”

The Chicago Bears are up next, led by Ostate84.
