With the ninth pick of the 2018 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select...

Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA

The selection and write-up were made by Mudville:

Luckily, the 49ers seem to have their quarterback situation settled and can focus on improving other areas, mainly wide receiver and pass rush. The 49ers definitely need some wide receiver help. Their leading touchdown-catcher last year was their back-up tight end, Garrett Celek, with a whopping four; no wide receiver had more than two. However, the 49ers can address this position with one of their late 2nd or early 3rd round picks.

Last year, the 49ers finished tied for 26th in sacks and they did not pick up the option on Elvis Dumervil, who led the team with 6.5 sacks. Davenport has the size and measurables and performed well at the Combine and Senior Bowl, including a sack of Mayfield and a fumble return for a touchdown to fill that void. Davenport will be able to rotate with and eventually replace the aging Earl Mitchell at LDE, which will complete a front four of all first round draft picks (Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, Solomon Thomas) to give the 49ers a formidable front, able to both stop the run and generate a pass rush.

Pokorny: “The 49ers can do no wrong with the draft. Jimmy Garoppolo has restored so much faith in the franchise, and if Kyle Shanahan has a quarterback he’s comfortable with, he can make magic work on offense without star-named players. Davenport therefore adds to the defensive presence to hopefully provide a big boost in the pass-rushing department.”
