2018 NFL Mock Draft: New York Giants Select QB Baker Mayfield at No. 2

God help us.

With the second pick of the 2018 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the New York Giants select...

Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

The selection and write-up were made by Your Friendly Neighborhood Esq.:

If the Giants pick a QB, many people expect the Giants to pick one of Darnold, Rosen, or Allen because they are more prototypical quarterbacks. However, I think if the Giants are truly looking to create a dynasty after Manning leaves at the end of the 2019-2020 season, if he even makes it to the end of contract, they will do it behind Baker Mayfield who is the best QB in this draft class.

Now, Baker’s positives (STATS!) and negatives (height/off-field/attitude) have been argued ad nauseam in the comments over the last few weeks, so I am not going to go in depth on those items. What I want to show is just why Baker is such a good fit for the Giants.

Browns fans familiar with new Giants HC Pat Shurmur will remember that he is a West Coast Offense disciple and values a pass-first offense focused on short-to-intermediate accurate and quick passes. Shurmur did well with his system in Minnesota last year with the talents of Case Keenum, Adam Thielen, and Latavius Murray. He’s now entering a system with Eli Manning, Odell Beckahm Jr. (maybe), and Jonathan Stewart (leading rusher in Panthers’ history).

In contrast, new OC Mike Shula ran a run-first and vertical-pass system in Carolina. He was Cam Newton’s QB coach when he set an NFL record for rushing TDs by a quarterback. Shula was also the Panther’s OC when Cam won League MVP and went to the Super Bowl in 2015 behind the #1 offense in the League at scoring points.

When you blend these styles, you get an offense that I think is tailor-made for Baker Mayfield. He is extremely accurate on the shorter throws, including screens and swing routes, but has the arm to keep defenses honest. He is always a threat to run and will keep defenses honest. He also has the benefit to sit behind Eli Manning and learn the details without being thrust immediately into the spotlight, which should give him time to mature and mellow out, similar to what happened with Eli.

I think Eli remains the starter for as long as he is in New York, giving Baker time to learn the offense from one of the top QBs in the game.

The only other player I seriously considered at this spot was Bradley Chubb. The Giants traded Jason Pierre-Paul to the Buccaneers two weeks ago for some draft picks without any real successor in-house or added in free agency, which would suggest that Chubb is the safe assumption for this mock. But I think the better move is to pick up Mayfield and stash him until Eli decides to retire and pick up a DE at pick #34.

But what about Barkley you ask? Positional value just isn’t there in my opinion.

In case people were interested, I’ve also provided a quick history of the Giants’ moves this year to give some context:

December 3, 2017: Eli Manning’s 13 year starting streak was snapped when Ben McAdoo starts Geno Smith in place of Manning
December 4, 2017: Ben McAdoo is fired.
December 29, 2017: Hired Dave Gettleman as GM
January 15, 2018: Hired Pat Shurmur as Head Coach who will also call all plays
February 14, 2018: Shurmur completes staff overhaul hiring Mike Shula as OC (former Panthers OC)
March 7, 2018: Traded two draft picks for Alec Ogletree from the LA Rams
March 9, 2018: A video surfaces showing what appears to be WR Odell Beckham Jr. in a compromising situation, prompting discussions to trade him
March 14, 2018: Signed Jonathan Stewart (Panthers’ all-time leading rusher) and CB Teddy Williams
March 16, 2018: Signed LT Nate Solder, OG Patrick Omameh, DB Curtis Riley, and LB Kareem Martin
March 19, 2018: Signed DE Josh Mauro, WR Cody Latimer, CB B.W. Webb, and DE Kerry Wynn
March 22, 2018: Traded premiere defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to Buccaneers for draft picks
March 26, 2018: Signed Safety Michael Thomas
April 5, 2018: Signed CB William Gay

Pokorny: “The writing is on the wall that the Giants need to be looking for their quarterback of the future, so I don’t care which one they take among the group. It’s the right start to prepare for life after Eli.”
